During the class of biology our class studied how DNA codes for traits, what Gmos are and how they are used today in certain crops like tomatoes, where translation and transcription occurs. The project that I am submitting The Infographic as an artifact for Biology had the following learning objectives. To understand how dna codes for traits and how dna can be modified to give certain organisms new traits. There was also the learning objective of evaluating the benefits and/or risks for genetically modified organisms or GMOs for short.
The artifact project was the glofish, which required me to use my knowledge of DNA, genes, protein synthesis, and genetically modified organisms. The Process I went through to do this project and meet the learning objectives tells me the following about myself and how I learned that there is a lot that goes into DNA coding and how Dna can be transferred from one organism to another to create a whole different organism. This also shows the extent of research and testing scientists have done when changing the DNA of an organism to make sure it doesn’t have a negative effect on our environment.
The Two School-Wide Learning Outcomes I demonstrated with this Artifact are a self directed learner who communicates effectively and thinking critically and creatively. I have demonstrated a self directed learner who communicates effectively in this project by the Glofish project this project showed me what it really means to communicate effectively by talking to other people to create a strong infographic on glofish and why they are helpful. This is important because it is a skill that can be used in daily life and even in the workplace.
I have demonstrated thinking critically and creatively in this project by the way the was infographic was worded and finding ways to make my points in the infographic stand out from the rest. This is important because in the workplace and in daily life, you need to be able to highlight points effectively but also be able to think creatively to create new and better ways to do things. I could have improved my work on this project by changing the setup of my infographic to convey points more clearly and effectively thus having a stronger infographic.
One thing I would like to improve upon for my next big project is when i get the project done or being able to keep track of time in general, this will allow me to finish things on time. One thing I would you change if I had a chance to do this project over again would be the layout of the project so it is able to show more and so there is more supporting facts then negatives. One thing that i have seen in my classmates' work or process that I would like to try is using a different object that is not regularly seen as a GMO and also being able to have a better idea for how long a project is going to take. One goal I would like to set up for myself for my next project is to get better at managing my time and complete the assignment on time or before that so I don’t feel rushed. Overall this project or unit was beneficial to my learning in Humanities because it showed me new vocabulary and taught me more about how GMOs have been around for a really long time and a little piece of how they first started.
